Chivda also known as Poha. It is a Flattened rice as a breakfast staple in South Asia.

If you have a sweet tooth, this can be eaten at any time of day and it is consider as a healthy quick snacks. This recipes is also made for festival like Diwali, Ganesh Chaturthi and Holi.


Chivda is also packed with healthy carbohydrates, plenty of iron and is relatively low in calories. It is said to be able to helps maintain a healthy gut and also balances blood sugar levels. A handful of Chivda, has about 201 calories.


There are many variations way of making this popular quick snacks . This recipe is prepared in the roasting method which is a healthier version with a mildly spiced and crisp texture taste. It could also be consider as a healthy breakfast idea.

Ingredient :

  • 2 cups thin red or white poha

  • â…“ cup peanuts

  • â…“ cup roasted chickpeas

  • â…“ cup cashews

  • ¼ cup chopped dry coconut slices - optional

  • 2 tablespoons of raisins

For Tempering :

  • 14 to 15 curry leaves

  • 2 green chilies - sliced or chopped

  • ¼ tsp turmeric powder

  • A generous pinch of devil's dung (asafoetida)

  • 2 teaspoons sugar

  • 1 to 1.5 teaspoons salt (optional)

  • ½ tablespoon oil (for a healthier choice, use Olive Oil)

Method :

  • Measure all the ingredients and place them separately in a plate.

  • Heat the Pan and keep on a low flame.

  • Add 2 cups of thin Poha and keep stirring gently to get the Poha evenly roasted.

  • Remove from heat when it is light and delicate and place aside to be used later.

  • Heat the oil and fry all the fruit individually in low heat. Keep stirring to avoid burn. Remove and set aside for use later.

Tempering And Mixing -

  • Heat ½ tablespoon of oil on a lower flame.

  • Add in the curry leaves, green chilies and a generous pinch of devil's dung and saute on a low flame.

  • Add a sprinkle of turmeric powder and 1 teaspoon of salt.

  • Add 2 teaspoons of sugar and keep stirring on a low flame till sugar starts caramelizing.

  • Now add in the roasted Poha and fried fruits

  • Mix all the ingredients well together

  • Keep stirring gently and saute for about 5 minutes and switch off the flame to let it cool.

  • Store in an air-tight container when it is cool and serve as quick snacks when you desire something sweet.

Important Notes :

  • Do not stir too much as the thin delicate Poha will break easily.

  • Store Chivda in air-tight container and if properly stored, it can last for a month.
