Before the spread of farming, the cave men had started to gather and consume oatmeal as far back as 25,000 years ago.

Studies shows that, researchers have found significant trace of oats grains on a stone pestle in the cave located southeast of Italy. The cave was completed with ancient wall paintings of horses, human burials and stone age tools. And evidence of oats starch grains left on the stone has clearly shown that the inhabitants have made good use of the plants.

The scientist also found that they would expose the oats to heat before being grounded up. Although there’s no direct evidence that the grains were mixed with water or if it is being cooked, but such process of grinning  the grains can mean that our ancestors had probably ate oatmeal a very long time before we would have known.
